Sea Islands

  • Lady’s Island is located just across the bridge from downtown Beaufort.  The beautiful Woods Memorial Bridge that Forrest Gump so famously ran links Lady’s Island to the Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park.  Golfers rave about the densely wooded Lady’s Island Country Club and Sanctuary Golf Clubs.  Lady’s Island is home to beautiful neighborhoods including Coosaw Point, Newpoint and more.
  • St. Helena Island is where the heart of the Gullah community beats strongest.  This community features restaurants that serve authentic Gullah fare rich with local seafood and produce.  Gullah descendants carry on the African culture, most noticeably with their signature, intricately woven sweetgrass baskets.  Look for roadside stands in the Frogmore area of the island.

The Penn Center Served as the country’s first school for freed slaves and later played a role in the Civil Rights movement.  Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. reportedly began his “I Have A Dream” speech at the center.  Today, this oak-shaded compound of wooden cabins and community buildings offer educational and cultural programs related to the history of the Sea Islands.

  • Harbor Island is a private, gated island with 2.5 miles of beautiful beach.  It is a small resort island located 14 miles east of BeaufortSouth Carolina. It is one of the Carolina Sea Islands and the majority of the island is tidal marsh, though approximately 800 acres of upland acreage exist on the northeastern portions of the island.   The island was uninhabited and used primarily as hunting grounds until the 1930s, when S. Highway 21was constructed to connect Saint Helena Island with Hunting Island State Park. A swing drawbridge carry crossing the Harbor River connects the island to Saint Helena Island towards the west. A small causeway crossing Johnson Creek connects Harbor Island with Hunting Island towards the south.
  • Fripp Island is the most seaward of South Carolina’s barrier islands.  Fripp boasts a 3-1/2 mile beach with wide expanses of soft sand and spectacular ocean vistas as far as the eye can see.

Fripp Island is in this idyllic setting where golf carts provide the major mode of transportation. Surrounded by spectacular natural beauty and the gentle sounds of the ocean, you’ll soon discover why Fripp Island has lured travelers to its shores over the years.  The Fripp Island Resort offers many exclusive amenities, including golf on two beautiful championship courses or a game of tennis at the Racquet Club.
