This past week, Port Royal’s Councilman Vernon DeLoach passed away. DeLoach was undoubtedly a hallmark to the town of Port Royal, and will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of working with him. We extend our sincere sympathies to his family and to the town of Port Royal.

With his passing, South Carolina State Law requires the town of Port Royal to hold a special election to fill the vacancy. Here are the dates to remember for the Special Election:

*Filing Period Opens: Friday, March 10th
*Filing Period Closes: Monday, March 20th
*Election Day: Tuesday, May 16th

There will be a Special Election coming up for School Board District 3 on March 28th with four candidates running to fill the open seat vacated when Michael Rivers won his election for the SC House of Representatives.

We are continuing to monitor South Carolina House Bills 3650 and 3651 regarding business licenses. The Beaufort Regional Chamber of Commerce has longstanding support for simplifying the process for all business. The standardization of the business licensing process will make it easier for a business to operate in different cities, towns and counties. The Chamber also supports a bill that would establish one expiration date for a business license and the ability for a firm to file online. However, there are provisions in the bill that could be detrimental to our municipalities’ ability to operate and the Chamber opposes those measures. The Chamber recognizes the need for compromise in Columbia for pro business changes to the licensing reform, but not at the cost of municipal operations.

Stay tuned! We will continue to update you.

All The Best,

Blakely Williams
