A NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT 11.22.16

This afternoon, I had the pleasure of attending the dedication and opening of The Clarendon Trailhead, part of the Spanish Moss Trail. The Trailhead was made possible by the James M. Cox Foundation. 9.8 miles of the Spanish Moss Trail are now complete. Congratulations to Spanish Moss Trail! The Trail is a significant fixture which connects our community and provides a place for recreational activities while preserving the natural beauty of Beaufort.

As we are all busy preparing to celebrate Thanksgiving this week, I am full of gratitude for this incredible community we are fortunate to call home. Just a little over a month ago, most of us were evacuated and bracing for news of the impact of Hurricane Matthew. In just six weeks, Beaufort has gotten back on its feet and come together in a huge way.

I am grateful to the first responders, utility workers, construction workers, and the list goes on who worked tirelessly to restore normalcy so quickly. Many businesses went above and beyond the call of duty. Here are just a few that come to mind:

  • 400 Hargray employees endured the storm so that they could immediately begin restoring their services as soon as the storm had passed. They worked alongside Palmetto Electric to ensure that services were available to Beaufort County Emergency Management and other emergency service providers.
  • Kinghorn Insurance provided free lunches to Beaufort residents.
Bricks on Boundary, Sea Eagle Market, and Hawg Wild Catering provided thousands of meals to first responders.
  • Bi-Lo, Piggly Wiggly in Port Royal and Food Lion provided free ice to those in need.
Celadon provided use of their Activity Center for hot showers for neighbors who were without power.
  • YMCA Beaufort County organized a kids day camp while schools were closed so that parents could go back to work or deal with hurricane recovery in their homes.
  • Love House Ministries organized a large effort to put together food packages to distribute to countless families in need.

Happy Thanksgiving! The Chamber is proud to serve and work alongside each of you every day. We hope to see you out shopping this Saturday for Small Business Saturday! Don’t miss the chance to support our local businesses AND get ahead on your Holiday shopping.
All The Best,

blakely
