Last week, a significant piece of our strategic plan was satisfied with the announcement from President Obama designating a new national monument honoring our country’s civil rights history and taking new steps to promote diversity in our national parks and other public lands.

The Reconstruction Era National Monument encompasses four sites throughout Beaufort County that tell the vibrant story of the robust community developed by freed former African American slaves in the Reconstruction Era South. This designation includes the Brick Baptist Church and Darrah Hall at the existing Penn Center on St. Helena Island as well as the Old Firehouse in downtown Beaufort and parts of Camp Saxton in Port Royal where the Emancipation Proclamation was read on New Year’s Day in 1863. These sites establish the first unit of the National Park System focused on telling the story of Reconstruction. This is a huge win for Beaufort and for the many individuals who have worked so hard to establish this monument!

Your Chamber leadership is heading to Columbia tomorrow in order to work with our elected officials to advance our Legislative Agenda at the State House. We look forward to working with the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce and hearing their plans for the 2017 Competitiveness Agenda.

We hope you are enjoying Restaurant Week! There are 5 days left so be sure to take this opportunity to try new hot spots or re-visit some of your favorite places. Visit www.beaufortrestaurantweek.com for participating restaurants and menu information.

Thank you for your membership investment and for your continued support. We look forward to working with you this year to make this region the preferred community to invest, prosper and enjoy.
All The Best,

Blakely Williams
